Privilege Requires You to Act....What will you do?

Lately, I've had an itching feeling, not physically but you know...like something good is going to happen.  Then on OPRAH, her new show highlighted the creator of Amazon.  He said something that I think is going to change my life...and I hope it changes your's too.  Simply, he spoke of regrets and doing things to make life better for people - that's why he started Amazon...to sell books and give people access to the Internet which he knew would be beneficial to people.   So simply stated, yet I guess it was the right time for me to hear this because the more I think about this the more it's changing me...

Yeah we think and/or hear about regrets all the time, but do we become active participants in our own destiny?  Try to think and see yourself at 80 years old.  IF God blesses me with that many years, I can't imagine hoping and wishing I would have done something different - not necessarily for myself, but for others.  My privilege REQUIRES me to act...  How easy is it to make a decision while looking at the big picture?!?!  I think this itching feeling is destiny calling!  I believe it's not an opportunity that may pop up but a simple action started by a simple idea like selling books online that can really create change in society.  Instead of thinking about profit (crazy I know) what if the motivator for doing something BIG was change...and what if the motivator stayed change.  I feel excited about the prospect of being involved in a movement to not only help people but to inspire people to uncover their own greatness.

Sitting in my own shoes, experiencing life as a poorer person, a "Black" woman and "other" - I know I want to empower this specific community to start with... poor young dis-served and undereducated girls - being a "hair mentor" (check out blog one) can open doors to a complicated yet super simple ideology about self-acceptance and love.  A hair mentor I believe is someone to dig deeper - not giving meaning, but helping young girls experience a variety of opportunities that allow them to develop a belief in their own grandeur.  The meaning of self-worth through our "roots" deserves to be voiced.  As a history teacher, I know what the curriculum states and this ain't in there.  It is time to get the power back and allow our girls to know the truth...keep following we're about to MOVE...

  1. I love this vibe. I was blessed enough to get a good education and experience things a lot of other people didn't I do feel I need to do more....sometimes it becomes a question of WHAT TO DO.

There is so much out here and we have to make decisions that work best for us I guess.

    This is a great post!

  2. Thanks for reading!!! I agree...figuring out what to do is always the issue...a little secret. Schools LOVE volunteers. A way to bipass all the red tape...call the school counselor see if you can help mentor kids through the college application process or whatever! I hope you keep reading. :)

  3. I was watching a documentary and someone said "everyone has a major role to play in making the world a better place". I think you're right it can certainly start with something simple. What will I do... well I'll have to get back to you on that:-)

  4. LOL...I'm still trying to figure it out too...I always think BIG picture which is jacking me up here...I need to think small. I mean start small. It's always the ideas that are so like, "duh" that make the difference, the things you are probably already doing but need to be "exploited-" in a good way of course. :)
