Cliche'? Oh Well...

Thanksgiving.  It should be an everyday thing, but let's be real.  Most of the time it's easier to think about what we need to work on, what we are not proud of, what bills are due next, and who is annoying us at work.  BUT As I was watching a very informational television show called "Real Housewives of Miami," (HAHAHAHAHA - TURRIBLE) with my best friend since kindergarten Kolo, I had an Oprah "ahhhaa" moment.  So try to follow me...

Sometimes we define greatness as being in a spotlight, having a lot of attention being defined a socially beautiful, having a lot of money, etc etc.  Well, these Housewives are all as I have described previously, BUT are NOT at ALL what I define as great.  They have everything (well all material things anyone could ask for) times a million thousand, yet still welcome so much negativity and drama in to their lives.  It's incredible how absolutely sad and disturbing this and so many other people who by society are defined as great and glorified on television and in other media outlets.  SO, okay, this may be their lives, but does it need to be glorified?

Another good friend of mine, Tina, commented on an old post and said, "our faults do not preclude us from greatness" and I agree, all the faults of these Housewives do not define them...but I guess I question what society defines as greatness.  If the Housewives of Miami are great, then I DO NOT WANT TO BE GREAT.  I don't want to be on TV, I don't want to be rich, I don't want NONE of it...Again, I agree, their faults are forgiveable, just like anyone elses, but their insistance on living in the clouds - living in the drama- THAT makes me angry; maybe less at the women but at society for allowing this to be "our great."

So may "ahhaaaa" moment was that I am related to, friends with, and around incredible and GREAT people.  I have been through interesting times and have been surrounded by the most "ordinary-great" people EVER.  This year, this month, My life - may be ordinary and boring to everyone else - and even me at times...

BUT I get to spend it with people who are true, people who care and love with their whole hearts....All these great people aren't necessarily validated by fame and fortunre (although they should be) but they are so positive and lovling beyond words.  I am so thankful for friends and family and I hope to remember what true greatness is, and pass this on to those I meet.  So my friends and family, if you didn't know NOW YOU KNOW -you are GREAT and I am so Thankful for all that you are and aren't....enjoy your holiday and reflect on what you are thankful for and the GREATNESS in your own lives.

  1. I like that term ordinary-great people! In order for the world to really change, in order for movements for justice to be successful after all doesn't it take ordinary people being great.
