Live the life you are...

I'm wondering...as an educator - we are taught to teach our students to have "back-up" plans to their dreams.  Usually, because the dreams/goals that are expressed seem "unrealistic" not only to us, but based on societal statistics.  What I'm trying to grasp is, are we killing dreams by suggesting students should second guess their "passion" or dream?  I know young people grow and mature and their dreams/goals change.  So is it our duty to have students second guess their goals (even when we know they might change) and in turn possibly create insecurities or questions that didn't necessarily need to be in a students life?  I have bought in (entirely) to the belief that when you follow your passion, miracles happen.  When young people have TONS of adults expressing doubt in their dreams are we killing the creativy and ingenuity in students lives?  I think naturally, through life experience and a belief in themselves students will create a path of success.  Whether it was the initial dream they first thought of or a different goal/dream.  I am REALLY questioning the idea that backup plans are important...teaching a student to believe in themselves and their passion will only lead to success.  If you are something, a singer a dancer an athlete a scientist, then you LIVE that life.  Don't second guess yourself.  Instead of saying, "I want to be ..." say "I am a .... in training."  Live the life you are.  THanks coach and friends for the inspirational conversations lately.  I see things SO differently....
