Am I the only one...?

On hair washing days, or when my hair is damp for whatever reason (maybe it's misty outside or rainy or  sweaty...yeah I said it, I work out!! hehe)  my hair appears a bit shorter than when it's fully dried and /or two strand twisted out....so here's my issue.  Help me people...because I'm almost embarrased.

When someone asks me, "lyd, did you cut your hair?"...I almost have to pause and count because I HATE when people ask me that!  Now, I wonder if it comes from a place of, what I call, "Black Girl Short Hair" syndrome.  Which in my opinion is linked to a history and legacy of what I like to call, "short and dark" issues created by those dominate in our society...and continually fueld by the media and all those awesome outlets who help us think.:) HAHA

Anyway,  society has jacked ME all up, and although I'm trying not to feed into these ideologies of beauty I find myself struggling to deal with this short hair issue.

I don't want short hair, and it's not that I don't LOVE short hair styles or find women of all different backgrounds absolutely BEAUTIFUL when they rock their short hair, I just have realized that I have a PERSONAL issue when it comes to the length of my hair.  And to be honest, and put myself out there this is not just an issue of preference.  I have a fear of short hair...on myself.

Phew....

So.   What do I do to help myself come to terms with hair length in my own life?  Why does it matter, anyway?  I mean really, Lyd (yes, I had to go to 3rd person here...) who cares...?  I think this deserves a SHEESH! Am I the only one???!!!

  1. No you def are not the only one. I think it is a social issue within the African American community. It takes years upon years for our hair to grow. So it’s a rarity for long hair (comparatively - I mean compared to others in our overall society) and hair in itself is a treasure. It's, a lot of times, used as an indicator of health, fertility, etc.

So the Short Hair Scare, as I have deemed it, affects a lot more women than you think
Look @ Les Mis... she cried when they took her hair lol not funny but kinda
