Today, a youngster was given an introduction to racial politics and institutional politics.... My vagueness is purposeful....
I think when a young person is introduced to all of the negativety that a society has to say about them, two important things can occur...among many... 1. This young person really really realizes that the world really isn't fair and 2. This young person begins to build a character around his/her new view of the world - this character can be one of anger and opposition or one of purpose...
Everytime I have experienced inequity, through the knots and tangles of discrimination and hate - although I'm pissed, I choose to use that anger to build my own character and to fuel the work I do. I pray that young people all over experiencing adultism, racism, ageism, all the "isms" take these experiences and allow them to be involved and part of their lifes purpose. There is no reason to get burnt up and keep yourself burnt.
I believe, because these discriminating experiences will happen, we must use them to fuel the fire for equity and not allow them to fuel the fire of anger within us...
