Sometimes I feel like many people in this country are afraid of progressing politically and in their own ideology because they fear change (which in my opinion change is inevitable!!). So many people choose to keep themselves in a fake bubble...fake in the sense that its NOT REAL. I just don't understand how you can preach and choose to make policies that ignore, deny, marginalize those (who historically) have had their voices silenced for not fitting into "historically traditional norms."
Obviously these policies are made from positions of power which have been "owned" by those with power...so I'm not surprised. But I still don't understand it...I wish I could get people to see beyond their own experiences. Including myself...
So many people are afraid of the unknown and I think many people are content with living in their bubble of "tradition." Tradition in a sense... is a sacred word. It represents the past, usually (but not always) good things that families, religious groups, EVERYONE has experienced and might be fond of and continue to do just because it's done before... Unfortunately, tradition is used as a silver shield against those "different." I don't think it should be a "silver shield" as many traditions have perpetuated terrifying and malicious treatment of others through this idea of tradition.
SOOOOOO - I challenge tradition. Growing up a woman, multiracial, not socially beautiful by standards, fat, a Black Lutheran and slighly awkward - I find that tradition in a social sense - doesn't like me and WOULDN't have liked me back in the "hayday" of "Leave it to Beaver." I'd put money on the fact that I would NOT have fit in any type-o-norm back then!
This tradition that many people are fighting for, I FEEL, is a huge slap in the face. I feel like this tradition that is being fought for excludes so many people (including myself) because of who they are, what they believe, and their life experiences. I get frustrated (as I try to see through the politics) when I think about how a fear of change, and really a HATE for "Change" and "Forward" thinking try to confuse and blind people from that fact that this country was not built on equity. We ALL don't have a fair chance so why do we still live in this myth of meritocracy??
Why is it a crime to invest in those who have been marginalized?
It's funny to me- those who are afraid of progressing or moving forward- or those who want people to just suffocate in their own realities and to assimilate to a safer more comforatable situation for themselves.... I guess I just feel a sense of frustration - it's hard to articulate in policies and law and in a voice that those who choose not to see and understand will understand. All I know is that this nation was NOT built on equity and we must recognize that there is no place to go but FORWARD.
